Kaylana Lake is located 8 km west of Jodhpur in Rajasthan, India. It is an artificial lake, built by Pratap Singh in 1872. The lake spreads over an area of 0.84 km2 (0.32 sq mi). In ancient times this region had palaces and gardens made by two rulers of Jodhpur - Bhim Singh and Takhat Singh. These were destroyed to make Kaylana Lake.
The lake is situated between igneous rock land formations. It receives its water from Hathi Nehar (translation: elephant canal), which is further connected to the Indra Gandhi canal. The natural vegetation here mostly consists of Babool trees (Acacia nilotica), and various migratory birds such as Siberian cranes are seen here in the winter season. The city of Jodhpur and all the surrounding towns and villages depend on Kaylana lake as a source of drinking water.
History of Kaylana Lake Jodhpur
It is situated on the west side of Jodhpur, the lake extends about 8 km. It was built in 1872 during the reign of Maharaja Pratap Singh. After that two rulers of Jodhpur Bhim Singh and Takhsingh contributed to the restoration and development of the lake. A portion of the Siddhanta end of Kaylana Lake is also called Takhtsagar.
Geography of Kaylana Lake
The area around Kaylana Lake is surrounded by Babool (Acacia) trees and a number of migratory birds like the Siberian Cranes etc. visit here every season. Owing to its rich wildlife, the place was also a hunting ground for the Rajas once. Surrounded by igneous rock formations, Kaylana Lake receives water from the nearby Hathi Neher and Indira Gandhi Canal. And the water from here is further drained into the Takhat Sagar and Umaid Bhawan Sagar.
Best Time to Visit
Since Kaylana Lake is situated in Jodhpur, the temperature is hot throughout the year. The best time to visit the lake is however during the winter months between October and March. The climate is relatively pleasant and you can have the best time.
How to Reach
The lake is about 8 kms from the city centre Jodhpur. State run buses and shares autos and rickshaws are easily available from the bus stop. Alternatively, you can hire a cab or a private taxi. In case you are driving, you can take the route that goes to Chapasani Road.
